Lead Backend Engineer
About On The Spot
About the team
Orca Security is a cloud security platform built for engineers who care about visibility, context, and speed. Founded in 2019 by former Check Point leaders, Orca has raised $630M+ and reached unicorn status in 2021.
Orca's platform scans the entire cloud environment — AWS, Azure, GCP, and more — and surface what actually matters by prioritizing findings on real-world context: exposure, privilege, and potential impact. Cloud teams choose Orca because it deploys fast, scales with real infrastructure, and stays out of the way.
The WASP team owns Orca's customer-facing web application and its backend, the public REST API, internal administration tooling, account and inventory management, the platform's authentication, authorization, licensing and feature-flag infrastructure, and the analytics and reporting data pipelines that turn product data into customer-facing insight.
About the role
Your main focus is to lead the team. You'll own the WASP team's delivery — taking responsibility for the team's committed items, planning the roadmap, running sprint planning, and leading backlog analysis — while working closely with Product Managers and other R&D managers to align on priorities and turn product goals into a clear, achievable plan.
While leadership is the primary focus, you'll stay hands-on — contributing to architecture, design, and code on critical paths, and setting the technical bar for the team. We expect the team to work with modern AI coding agents (Claude) as part of everyday engineering, and you'll set the standard for how the team adopts them.

Responsibilities
- Lead the team's delivery: own the committed items, plan and groom the roadmap, run sprint planning, and lead backlog analysis
- Work closely with Product Managers and other R&D managers to align priorities, manage dependencies, and translate product goals into an executable plan
- Drive architecture and design decisions across the team, where data correctness, customer-facing API stability, multi-tenant isolation, and pipeline reliability are first-class concerns
- Stay hands-on: write clean, concise, well-tested code on critical paths — primarily in Python, with Go for selected backend services
- Use AI agents to accelerate development, investigation, code review, and lead the team in building effective, safe agent-assisted workflows
- Diagnose complex issues, evaluate options, and recommend and execute the best solution
- Own the domain end-to-end, including DevOps: CI/CD, cloud infrastructure on AWS, and monitoring/alerting
- Lead the team's on-call rotation and production incident response for the domain
- Run team ceremonies, manage delivery against the roadmap, and grow team members
- Manage the performance of the team

- Strong Python development experience, including web frameworks for Python (DRF, FastAPI, Flask, etc.)
- Hands-on Go development experience for backend services
- Practical experience using AI coding agents in day-to-day engineering, and a point of view on where they add the most value
- Experienced in building and supporting analytic systems
- Knowledge of designing and implementing event-driven systems
- Deep understanding of SQL database capabilities within web applications (PostgreSQL)
- Experienced with micro-service architecture and cloud-native services, focused on AWS cloud infrastructure
- Solid understanding of software design principles, concurrency, synchronization, memory management, data structures, algorithms, etc.
- 1+ year as a tech lead or team lead, with proven ability to plan and own delivery, make and defend technical decisions, and grow other engineers
- Ability to prioritize and organize effectively, with good communication skills
- Solid analytical and troubleshooting abilities
- English level — B2
Nice to have
- Experience defining team-wide practices for AI-assisted development (agent workflows, review and quality guardrails)
- Experience with modern analytics and data-pipeline tooling
- Experience building or maintaining publicly published developer or infrastructure-as-code tooling
- Experience owning customer-facing reliability and leading incident response
