About

What is custom software development?

Custom software development means building software for one company's specific workflow instead of buying a ready-made product, so the code, the data model and the roadmap belong to that company.

Our practices come from what our teams build: security platforms, AI systems, software at global scale. Team leads meet regularly and bring real cases, so what one team learns reaches the others.

If you’re interested in the full R&D-center version, with recruitment, HR, payroll and legal inside one contract, explore our offshore development center services.

When to use

Who this custom software development model is right for

01

Two or more engineering roles are open and your local market fills them slowly or expensively

02

The product is already live and the work continues after the current release

03

You want engineers inside your own sprints and code review, reporting to your managers

04

You need a skill your team does not have in-house: security, data, DevOps, or game engine work

05

You want the option to move those engineers onto your own payroll later

Why On The Spot Development

What you get that a fixed-scope vendor doesn't

You run the technical interview

We prescreen for skills, English and motivation, and share the screening call so you see a candidate before booking your own. Run the technical round yourself, or our CTO or a tech expert runs it to your criteria. You decide who joins.

One customer per engineer

Every engineer is 100% dedicated to your product, full time. No shared capacity, no engineer split across two roadmaps.

Salaries you can see

You see each engineer's gross salary and the On The Spot Development management fee as separate lines.

A cost you can rebuild yourself

Engineers are employed in Poland on EU contracts, with a working day that overlaps the EU fully and the US East Coast in the afternoon. You get a written cost breakdown per role before you commit.

We carry the operations

HR, benefits, payroll, legal, equipment, the office and account management sit with us. You carry product direction and priorities.

Buyout right from day one

If an engineer becomes core to your product, you can hire them into your own company. The right is in the contract from the first day, not unlocked at a milestone we choose.

You can hire the engineers into your own company

Many vendors lift that restriction at a milestone they define. With us the right exists from day one, and the price is written into the contract you sign.

Technologies our engineers run in production

Backend

Python, Node.js, GoLang, C#, .NET and Ruby on Rails. In production behind cloud security scanning, software supply chain security, sports data at match-day peaks and fitness platforms.

React, across three security products and one SaaS product, all of them already in front of paying customers.

Mobile

React Native, Flutter and Xamarin, for consumer apps and AI-first mobile products.

DevOps and Cloud

Total employment cost per senior engineer is materially lower than in the US or Israel at a comparable level, and you see how that cost is built.

Data and AI

PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Kafka, Clickhouse, MySQL and Llama Index. Analytics that stay honest at billions of events, and retrieval pipelines where every generated output needs a record of how it was produced.

Game and realtime

Unity3D with 2D and 3D production, plus automated and manual QA inside your sprint.

Industries & Domains

Industries we build software for

Cybersecurity

Agentless cloud scanning across infrastructure, operating systems, applications and data, without per-asset agents. Delivery pipeline security, and correlating SDLC events into contextual findings and automated remediation. Domain experience: Orca Security, Cycode.

AI and machine learning

Regulated document review where retrieval quality decides product quality long before model choice does, and every generated output needs an audit trail. AI-first consumer mobile apps. Domain experience: 44pixels.

Gaming and ad tech

Growth and monetisation at ad-network scale: analytics that stay honest at billions of events, personalisation where a latency regression is a revenue regression, and UX layers embedded into the mobile operating system and shipped through handset makers and carriers. Domain experience: Unity, Tripledot Studios.

Fintech

Trading platforms under multi-jurisdiction regulation, partner-facing CRM, onboarding and retention flows, and real-time monitoring of voice, chat and email for compliance teams.

Sports and media

Personalised live content at match-day traffic peaks: real-time scores and clips, per-user feeds, and notification delivery where late is the same as broken. Domain experience: 365Scores, Fisikal.

SaaS and marketplaces

Billing, contracts and customer communication in a single flow, in-app payments, and end-to-end synchronisation with an external system of record. Domain expertise: HoneyBook.

Testimonials

What clients say

OTS filled three senior backend roles in under three weeks. The candidates were technically sharp and a great cultural fit. Unlike other agencies, they actually understood our stack and asked the right questions. We were fully staffed before we expected to be.

Arie Teter
ex-CPO

We had been trying to hire an ML lead for six months. OTS delivered two strong, pre-vetted candidates in ten days. The technical screening saved us dozens of interview hours.

Dor Atias
Co-Founder & CPO

Every CV OTS sent was relevant. No noise, no keyword-matched filler. That alone made the process feel completely different from what we had experienced with generalist agencies.

Boaz Adato
Head of engineering guild

On The Spot Development has provided us with 15 developers, including server and automation engineers, who have been writing the core of 365Scores' engine. The team has delivered high-quality work, helping us reduce costs by 2X and speed up our development.

Our process

From request to first commit

Scope call

You tell us the roles, the stack, the seniority and where the gap is hurting. We come back with what those roles cost in Poland, how long each one takes to fill, and which of them we can move on first.

01

Shortlist in 3 to 5 days

We look at engineers we already work with and at the market: a database of more than 60,000 specialists and 200+ tech communities. You get real CVs with real salary numbers.

02

Prescreening

We check skills, English and motivation, and share the screening call so you see a candidate before booking your own.

03

Technical interview

Run it yourself, or our CTO or a tech expert runs it to your criteria. You decide who joins.

04

Offer and contract

We handle the offer, the Polish employment contract, IP assignment, equipment and the Warsaw office. Nothing waits on anything else.

05

Embedded in your team

06

The engineer joins your repositories and board, uses your tools and follows your processes. Payroll, benefits and HR stay with us.

Why Poland

Why Poland for custom software development

A market deep enough to hire from twice

Around 650,000 tech professionals, with roughly 57,000 STEM graduates entering the market each year. Our own database covers more than 60,000 of them.

EU law, not a new legal regime

GDPR, EU-level IP protection and employment contracts your counsel already recognises. No entity to register and no local HR function to build.

A working day that overlaps yours

CET gives a full working day with the UK and Europe and several hours with the US East Coast.

Cost structure

Total employment cost per senior engineer is materially lower than in the US or Israel at a comparable level, and you see how that cost is built.

Engineers who are not on job boards

We run TechSpot (our own event series in Warsaw), work with 200+ tech communities, and look through open Github-repositories. That is where the engineers who are not actively looking are.

FAQ

Frequently asked
questions

We provide the engineers who build your software. They are employed by us in Poland, work on your product only, inside your repositories and sprints, and report to you. We stay the legal employer and handle payroll, HR, legal and the Warsaw office.

No. We do not sell turnkey delivery against a fixed scope. We staff engineers into your team, or build and run a dedicated team for you. If you need a vendor to own a defined scope end to end and hand it over, a project outsourcing company is the right fit, and we will say so on the first call.

We present the first profiles within 3 to 5 days of the scope call. Rare skill sets take longer, and we say so on the call.

You pay each engineer's gross salary plus a fixed monthly On The Spot Development management fee, shown as separate lines with no bundling. There is no percentage margin on top of the salary. We build a breakdown for your specific roles and seniority levels before you commit.

You do, 100%. Every engineer's work product belongs to you, set out in the contract. The engineers work inside your repositories under your process, and Poland is GDPR-native, so EU data rules apply by default.

Yes. A buyout right applies from day one. If an engineer becomes core to the product, you can convert them to your own headcount instead of losing the knowledge.

Yes. Every engineer is 100% dedicated to your product, full time, with no shared capacity. They keep your context between sprints instead of being rotated off to another account.

Yes. The same sourcing engine adds engineers as the team grows. Past a certain size the question stops being about adding people and starts being about running a team, and that is what our offshore development center services cover, with recruitment, HR, payroll and legal inside one contract.

In our Warsaw office at Prosta 51. They are employed under Polish and EU law on the CET timezone, which overlaps the EU fully and the US East Coast in the afternoon.

Then you want recruitment. Our tech recruitment services place engineers straight onto your payroll for a one-time fee, with no management fee afterwards, because they become your own employees.
